New mobile app uses advanced artificial intelligence to create mocap videos

Move.ai’s software extracts natural human motion from video using advanced AI, computer vision, biomechanics and physics, automatically retargeting the data to a character rig

A new mobile phone app is aiming to make motion capture available for all by employing software that extracts human motion from video using advanced artificial intelligence.

Using Move.ai’s iOS app, creatives can generate studio-quality mocap by employing between two and six iPhones.

The beta programme has already seen over 20,000 sign ups pre-launch and the technology is already being used by AAA studios, said the company.

Move.ai’s software extracts natural human motion from video using advanced AI, computer vision, biomechanics and physics, automatically retargeting the data to a character rig. Users can capture footage in any environment, with no suits, markers or additional hardware needed.

Fred Isaac, head of product at Move.ai, saod: “One of my favourite parts of the app is the simplicity. Anyone, anywhere can pick up the app and start capturing human motion with intricate detail, including hands, which are notoriously difficult to capture.

“Our greatest achievement so far has been capturing motion from a person using a jetpack, but we’ve also explored the app’s possibilities in various activities such as dance and sports, and even being able to capture fundamental human emotions.”
