Moov and MST up to par with Chyron for Open Championship

Moov and MST Systems used seven Chyron HyperX3 on-air graphics systems to support the BBC's coverage of the Open Championship over the weekend. It used the same workflow implemented at the Scottish Open.

Moov and MST Systems used seven Chyron HyperX3 on-air graphics systems to support the BBC’s coverage of the Open Championship over the weekend at the Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich. It used the same workflow implemented at the Scottish Open, writes David Fox.

“Live golf coverage demands perhaps the most diverse assortment of graphics, and this challenge is compounded by the high and constant volume of data being generated,” said Duncan Foot, Moov’s managing director. “This year we relied solely on Chyron’s HyperX3 on-air graphics systems, which not only provided us with the power required for rich 3D graphics, but also offered the flexibility and interoperability necessary for our partner, MST Systems, to bring a variety of data into those graphics in real time. MST Systems’ ability to work quickly and confidently with the Chyron platforms eliminated the need to rebuild and recheck all our graphics, which in turn made for a much simpler and more pleasant tournament.”

Moov created the network’s graphics package and MST turned those graphics into templates populating them with data ranging from scores, statistics, and standings.

MST’s familiarity with the HyperX3 allowed it to turn around graphics templates within 24 hours. During the tournament, Moov also used the HyperX3 to air headline sequences in which live video from a critical drive, putt, or other stroke were shown with a full-screen graphic in real time without requiring rendering.

The HyperX3 systems “not only provide the power we need at an attractive price point, but also interface well with our own software to support delivery of high-impact data-rich graphics,” said Stuart Paterson-Browne, MST’s software development manager. “The integrated system combining our software with HyperX systems has performed perfectly in all recent events, and we plan to move all of our graphics facilities, including all European Tour, Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, and World Touring Car Championship graphics, over to Chyron systems within the next two years.”

Moov has provided graphics for such broadcasters as the BBC, ESPN, AI Jazeera, RTE, ITV, Sky Italia, and Channel 4. MST has provided graphics and scoring facilities at six Ryder Cups, 11 Open Championships, and more than 1,000 other golf tournaments for the European Tour, Asian Tour, OneAsia tour, China Tour, and the LPGA. In future, Moov and MST plan to use their graphics workflow and Chyron systems for coverage of other high-profile events such as the 2012 Summer Games in London.
