Scientific Atlanta HD MPEG-2 encoders have been selected by the EBU to deliver HD programming of sports events to a variety of service providers and broadcasters across Europe.

“The crisp video and high-quality audio of HD broadcasts deliver a sports entertainment experience for viewers that makes them feel as if they are at the stadium, sitting among other fans, cheering for their favourite team,” said Jean-Marc Soustre, head of Eurovision Technical Management at the European Broadcast Union. “To support the launch of such an advanced video service, we chose to rely on the technology and video delivery expertise of Scientific Atlanta. The success of our new HD service is the result of months of effort by the EBU and Scientific Atlanta to establish a reliable HD encoding platform that ultimately results in an exciting entertainment experience in the homes of sports fans all across Europe.”

The Scientific Atlanta D9050 HD MPEG-2 encoders used by the EBU to deliver the world football championship matches in Germany to European service providers and broadcasters, will be redeployed by EBU to support its 2006 expanded HD sports programming business plan. In addition to the high quality and reliability of Scientific Atlanta’s HD encoding technology, the EBU’s HD initiative benefited from the Union’s landmark efforts in deploying the DVB-S2 digital video broadcasting system to maximise satellite transponder efficiency and deliver a high-quality entertainment experience using advanced forward error-correction.
