BBC and Nomint blaze stop-motion trail for Milano Cortina 2026

The ambitious project used 700 3D-printed miniature figures for the opening credits of the BBC's Winter Olympic coverage

Nomint and BBC Creative have partnered on a stop-motion trailer highlighting the broadcaster’s coverage of the Winter Olympic Games.

Co-founder and creative director at London-based production company Nomint, Yannis Konstantinidis, led the process, working to create a film that would “capture the luminous force of world-class athletes blazing across the frozen landscapes of the Dolomites.”

The team delivered a stop-motion film, which the company said pushed the limits of what can be achieved with the technique. Shot frame-by-frame, the production used 700 individually 3D-printed figures. Rather than relying on digitally-created fire and flames, it used 14 controlled combustion techniques to provide natural illumination and deliver a memorable film embracing “unpredictability and craft in equal measure.”

Commenting on the film, titled, Trails Will Blaze, Konstantinidis said, This project was technically demanding and creatively exhilarating. From our very first conversation with BBC Creative, we knew we had the chance to pursue the near-impossible. It demanded absolute trust and a willingness to take real creative risks in pursuit of something extraordinary. This film celebrates courage, not just in sport, but in creativity. It is a reminder that when brave creative teams come together with obsessive makers, you can still create work that breaks new ground.”
