AWS enables existing infrastructure cloud encoding with Elemental MediaLive Anywhere

The solution aims to allow video encoding with MediaLive in any location

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of Elemental MediaLive Anywhere.

The new feature enables users of AWS Elemental MediaLive to run live video encoding on-prem while using the cloud for management. Deployed on existing hardware, MediaLive Anywhere enables configuration, control, monitoring and management tasks to be performed in the cloud while video processing is conducted on-premises. The solution improves hybrid workflow operations, minimises video transit and enables connection to on-prem sources and destinations, said the company.

Manish Rao, GM, AWS Elemental, said, “When you can’t get your live video sources to the cloud, MediaLive Anywhere brings the cloud to you. If you have a video source or destination anchored on premises or a compute investment that you want to continue to use, MediaLive Anywhere brings the same great capabilities, APIs, monitoring tools, console, and pay-as-you-go pricing that you get with MediaLive to enable encoding anywhere.”

Users are able to manage hybrid or on-prem encoding with consistent APIs, channel profiles, logs and metrics. Configuration, control and monitoring of all channels can be handled in one place, even with multiple on-prem locations. Each new channel started in MediaLive Anywhere is provided with the latest features and updates, including new codecs and encoding quality, without the need for software updates.

Netflix’s Flavio Ribeiro, senior engineering manager, live encoding technologies, commented, “AWS Elemental MediaLive Anywhere has the ability to transform the way we deliver live video to our subscribers. The consistent experience between on premises and cloud workflows, automated software updates, and integrated support will make it simple to deploy and control new video workloads anywhere.”

The solution aims to reduce complexity for users with video sources anchored on-premises, such as SDI, or local network destinations. Similarly, costs can be reduced when users need to send live video to local network destinations, said AWS.

Additionally, MediaLive Anywhere is designed to ease migration from local hardware to fully managed cloud encoding. Hardware deployed in data centres can be repurposed as cloud-controlled encoders. Simplified migration is possible from existing AWS Elemental Live L800 and L900 solutions to MediaLive Anywhere.

Pay-as-you-go pricing ensures that only the channels being run are paid for, and only at the times they need to run, enabling flexibility and cost-effective streaming of live events and 24/7 channels, said the company. Software licensing can also be efficiently managed.

The solution is available in all regions where AWS Elemental MediaLive is available
