Germany’s Euro 2020 team camp employs 5G for media

Set-up at Hezogenaurach includes a 5G core network, 5G base station and external antenna for network coverage of the site

The German Euro 2020 team camp in Herzogenaurach has been 5G-enabled for broadcasters who want to use the technology to report from the team’s base.

The set-up at Hezogenaurach includes a 5G core network, 5G base station and external antenna for network coverage of the site. The 5G campus network is connected to Media Broadcast’s nearby fibre-optic backbone via a gigabit connection.

The signal is then sent within a few milliseconds to the production centre in Ismaning before it is broadcast in high resolution to German viewers.

Camera teams on site can access the 5G technology via LiveU’s LU800 packs. The set-up also includes Media Broadcast’s 5G Blue Box technology which houses both the Core Net components and the control units for the Radio Access Network (RAN).

“We are pleased to be able to support this major media event with one of the most innovative approaches in TV production. Together with our partner LiveU, we are proud to be able to use our solution, which was introduced in April 2021, for the first time in a real TV production,” said Daniel Wolbers, project manager for 5G campus networks at Media Broadcast.
