German Football League considering legal action against Discovery

Discovery believed to have a "special termination" clause in its media rights deal

The German Football League (DFL) is reportedly considering legal action against Discovery as the broadcaster seeks to terminate its media rights contract.

According to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung a “special termination” clause in the broadcaster’s deal can be used in the event of an unforeseen circumstance, such as the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

It is thought that the DFL is considering legal action against the move by Discovery, which has showcased the Bundesliga matches on Eurosport. The broadcaster has a four-season deal for Bundesliga rights which runs to the 2020-21 season.

Last year Discovery sublicensed the rights to DAZN. It is thought DAZN is paying Discovery significantly less than the linear broadcaster is paying the DFL.

Bundesliga matches were expected to restart on 9th May but it’s thought that date has been pushed back.
