Analyst: Disney Plus subs to overtake Netflix in next five years

According to Digital TV Research, much of the subscriber growth will be driven by India's Disney Plus Hotstar

Following last week’s stellar subscriber numbers from Disney Plus, analysts Digital TV Research are predicting the SVoD will become the market leader by 2026.

The analysts expect the number of subscribers to Disney Plus will reach 294 million within the next five years, surpassing Netflix’s total of 286 million. However, the analysts state Disney Plus will only have more subs than Netflix in one country – India – 98 million Disney Plus Hotstar subscribers versus 13 million for Netflix.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Disney Plus Hotstar will roll out to 13 Asian countries by 2026. These countries will supply 108 million (37 per cent) of the global Disney Plus subscriber total, but only $2.62 billion (13 per cent) of the platform’s revenues by 2026. Hotstar subscribers pay less than a third of the monthly subscription fee of their US counterpart.”

Global revenues for Disney Plus will be $20.76 billion by 2026 – half of Netflix’s $39.52 billion.
