Riedel has revealed its RefCam Live solution has been deployed during an international football match for the first time.
Aiming to complement the existing camera angles, the solution made its international competition debut at the Stuttgart stadium during the friendly between Germany and Ghana. Integrated into the broadcast setup alongside Riedel’s Easy5G Private 5G network, RefCam Live provided authentic close range footage directly from the referee’s perspective.
Wireless signal transmission was provided by Riedel’s Easy5G system with an Easy5G Core and two base stations, with the signal transmitted to TV production via SDI. Referee communication during the game were enabled by RedComms with Bolero S, aiming to ensure clarity and reliability throughout.
Commenting on the deployment, Dalton Koch, junior project manager at Riedel Communications, said, “In an international context, the RefCam offers far more than just a new camera angle. It realises its full potential precisely in those moments when closeness, dynamism, and emotion become visible. At the same time, it helps referees capture critical game situations and thus make them easier to understand by recording relevant scenes directly from the referee’s perspective.”
Jacqueline Voss, executive director of strategy and innovation at Riedel’s managed technology division, added, “Following successful deployments in various leagues and cup competitions, this international soccer match marks an important milestone for RefCam and Easy5G. We are delighted with the successful implementation in close collaboration with the DFB. It illustrates how we at Riedel approach innovation: practical, production-ready, and with clear added value for viewers, production partners, and sports organisations.”
