EBU, NABA and Linux partner on MXL software development kit

The project aims to boost interoperability and agility across media ecosystems

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Linux and NABA have announced a collaboration on an open source MXL software development kit.

Recognising a need for native live media exchange on local or hosted infrastructure, the cross-industry project, under the Linux Foundation, is especially relevant for systems defined by the EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) Reference Architecture.

The Media eXchange Layer (MXL) software development kit (SDK) is the result of an EBU-led initiative, working alongside NABA (North American Broadcasters Association) and members including the BBC, CBC/Radio-Canada, SR, SWR and a number of key vendors.

The initial public release of the MXL code for the project, developed in under seven months and aiming to boost interoperability, is available at https://github.com/dmf-mxl/mxl,

Antonio Arcidiacono, CTO at the EBU, said, “The MXL SDK is a testament to what’s possible when broadcasters and tech partners unite to solve industry challenges. It will be vital in helping our members fully leverage IT technologies to deploy vendor-neutral live production systems.”

The project’s initial Technical Steering Committee includes the EBU, CBC/Radio-Canada, BBC, Grass Valley, Riedel, Lawo, Nvidia, and AWS.
