Platform Futures – Sports stream added to IBC2017 Conference programme

On Sunday 17 September, Platform Futures – Sports will look at how sports and sports media rights can be exploited using the tools available in 2017.

Digital disruption has increased cord cutting as consumers abandon their TV screens and created opportunities for rights holders and broadcasters to provide the meaningful interaction that the modern day sports consumer wants. From the broadcasting of live events to the evolution of alternative formats for traditional sports, distinguished panellists will engage the IBC crowd with their expertise on the importance of fan engagement.

The day will begin with Eurosport Chief Executive Peter Hutton sharing his experiences and insight into the impact of the rise in alternative sports, the importance of fan engagement, and his predictions for e-sports in the next three years in the ‘Sports Business and the Consumer Keynote’.

This will be followed by a discussion entitled ‘Beyond Live: New Tech Pushing the Boundaries’, where Ken Kerschbaumer, Editorial Director at Sports Video Group, will lead a panel of industry figures, including Dan Miodownik of Host Broadcast Services and David Shield of Img Media, in debating the challenges associated with delivering major sporting events across the globe to different cultures, different time zones, and different devices. The panel will look at ways in which fans around the world engage with sports content differently and discuss how developing a global brand can help to create new revenue streams at home and abroad.

Other highlights throughout the day include a look at ways to create engagement opportunities and how to promote and monetise them, and a delve into the rise of alternative sports, such as Twenty20 Cricket, Rugby 7s, X-Games and MMA and how broadcasters are cashing in on these exciting, quick and entertaining events.

The day will finish with an eSports demonstration by two of the leading eSport champions competing (remotely) on the big screen. With a global market estimated in 2016 to top $463M, the power of eSports is unquestionable; this demonstration will enable IBC visitors to gain a sense of what eSports is.
