James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision unifies 3D production with STEREOTEC acquisition

The acquisition aims to unify 3D production from capture to delivery, lowering barriers to access for cinematic, broadcast and immersive production

James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision has announced the acquisition of 3D production technology developer STEREOTEC.

Founded nearly two decades ago, Munich-based STEREOTEC’s precision-engineered rigs and control systems enable reliable, repeatable pixel-accurate alignment, aiming to distinguish premium 3D production from approximation. The company has provided on-set stereography services for some of the world’s “most demanding productions,” including Gemini Man and Dune: Part Two. Additionally, it has played a key role as a technical partner on immersive content for Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro.

The acquisition supports Lightstorm’s ambition to become the global standard for high-fidelity 3D, from capture through delivery, said the company.

Commenting, Oscar-winning director and founder of Lightstorm Vision, Cameron, said, “Florian (STEREOTEC founder, Dr Maier) and I share a vision for the 3D future, like brothers from another mother. We intend to manifest that vision together through rapid advancement in technology over the next few years. We are both innovators at heart, and take joy in pushing the tech to create beautiful,  transformative 3D experiences. As stereoscopic 3D expands in all entertainment media, including sports, music, streaming, and movies, we will remain at the cutting edge and hold the  lead as the go-to brand for highest quality and efficient production.”

“In everything they do, Jim and the Lightstorm Vision team express a deep commitment to excellence in the field of 3D, both from a technological and a creative standpoint. The opportunity to shape the future of 3D together by bringing our native capture innovation into the next generation of fully integrated, automated 3D systems is incredibly exciting. When Jim asked if I could imagine joining Lightstorm Vision, there was really only one answer: yes, with great pleasure,” said Maier, founder and CEO, STEREOTEC.

Aiming to lower the barrier to entry to 3D adoption, the deal allows Lightstorm to provide a unified service, reducing cost, time and technical complexity such as reliance on post-production reconstruction. The ability to capture accurate depth at source provides a foundation for scalable, production-ready 3D workflows across cinematic, broadcast and immersive platforms.
