DPP: Broadcasters have moved their obsession from scale to profitability

The DPP's latest report reveals a new focus within the media industry on optimising core business processes, rather than technology

Media industry business network The DPP has published a report summarising 45 insights from its DPP Media Supply Festival 2023 held in New York at the start of the month.

The annual event takes the temperature on the strategies and technologies that are powering the content supply chain.

The report, titled Supply Chain Today: The Key Insights, reveals a new focus within the industry on optimising core business processes, rather than technology.

It was also revealed that there has been greater alignment between the business, technical, and financial parts of media organisations in the last 12 months. With that comes more conversations about what is required for successful business change: planning slow to deliver fast, it adds.

Writing in the report, the DPP’s CEO Mark Harrison suggests commercial media organisations have “shifted dramatically from an obsession with scale to an obsession with profitability,” adding that EBITDA is now more important than market cap.

“With such focus on business effectiveness and the bottom line, perhaps it is surprising to find so much enthusiasm for the latest advances in artificial intelligence – and particularly generative AI,” adds Harrison.

“At this year’s Media Supply Festival speakers and audience alike insisted on this technology being foundational rather than controversial. It will be very interesting to see if, in another 12 months, that view seems farsighted or myopic.”

Another key theme of the event was composable architecture, which the report states is now a reality rather than an aspiration, “not just from the technical perspective, but because of the growing range of truly cloud-native components”.
