Culture secretary mulls intervention in Fox’s Sky deal

Sky agreed to sell the remaining 61 per cent of its business late last year

UK culture secretary Karen Bradley says she is “minded” to intervene over 21st Century Fox’s deal to take full control of Sky.

Sky agreed to sell the remaining 61 per cent of its business not owned by Fox late last year.

Bradley said she was “minded” to refer the deal to Ofcom, who will look into concerns over media plurality and Fox’s intentions to maintain broadcasting standards.

Bradley has ten working days from today to make the final decision as to whether to involve the regulator.

They would have 40 days to explore public interest concerns and, providing no issues are raised, Bradley could then give the all-clear. Fox will otherwise have to address any concerns.

The proposed deal is also subject to European regulator clearance.
