BBC Sport nets BADMINTONscotland deal

BBC Sport has agreed a deal for the rights to the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

Taking place from 21-27 August, the coverage will encompass live streaming of action on both courts on the BBC Sport website throughout the championship, as well as a one-hour highlights programme the day after the finals.

Anne Smillie, CEO, BADMINTONscotland, said: “This is fabulous news, one of the most significant developments in our countdown to the Worlds. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have BBC on board as a major partner.

“BBC Sport will broadcast the World Championships on the various BBC platforms, with live streaming from two courts.

“We anticipate that this could be the first step in making badminton a mainstream sport available to everyone living in the UK.”

Councillor Archie Graham OBE, deputy leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, added: “We are all so excited about this BBC partnership. Of course nothing will beat the atmosphere in the fabulous Emirates Arena, but watching live action from your own home is a close second!

“By making the Badminton World Championships more accessible to people living across the UK, we hope to introduce a new generation to badminton; letting them experience first-hand how interesting and exciting the sport can be.”
