BBC Question Time welcomes AI-generated panellists

The BBC said the use of AI was in line with its editorial guidelines

Last night’s episode of the BBC’s Question Time featured AI-generated versions of Mahatma Gandhi, Frida Kahlo, Che Guevara and Emmeline Pankhurst.

The episode was dedicated to a discussion on artificial intelligence, with the “imagined panel” aiming to increase audience understanding of how hyper-real and persuasive AI images are and how they can blur the lines between reality and fakery.

Speaking ahead of the broadcast, host Fiona Bruce said: “AI has the power to change all our lives — for good and bad. Are we ready for it? Will we be able to control it? How will we know what’s real and what’s not? Just some of the questions we aim to explore in tonight’s special programme.”

The BBC said the use of AI was in line with its editorial guidelines.

The programme also included a panel of real-life experts who shared their thoughts on whether AI can help people better understand what it means to be human or diminish it.
