Oliver Dowden succeeds Nicky Morgan as culture secretary

Previously described himself as "the MP for Albert Square"

Oliver Dowden has been appointed as secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

He follows Nicky Morgan in the role. Morgan announced she would stand down ahead of the cabinet reshuffle.

Dowden’s previous role in government was as cabinet office minister.

He has previously described himself as the MP for Albert Square as his constituency, Hertsmere, is home to Elstree Studios, where EastEnders is filmed.

In his maiden speech to the House of Commons in 2015, Dowden said the location “allows me to make a legitimate claim to be the Member of Parliament for Albert Square.”
