The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will present the 2027 IEEE Arun N Netravali Video Analytics, Technology, and Systems Award to Benjamin Bross, Jens-Rainer Ohm and Gary J Sullivan for their work in the development of HEVC/H.265.
The award recognises their leadership in video coding standardisation and the importance of the standard they successfully developed together with the video industry community.
The development of the HEVC standard brought together experts from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in a team known as the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC).
Professor Ohm and Dr Sullivan chaired the development of the standard, and Bross was the lead editor of its specification document.
According to the IEEE, their leadership ensured the standard’s practicality for mass-market implementation and its complete and detailed technical specification.
The trio will be presented with their awards at a luncheon on 5th May 2027, as part of IEEE Awards Week.
