Tony Hall: some BBC services could be “out of action” due to coronavirus

"We are making sure we've got every eventuality covered"

Some BBC services could be “out of action” if its newsrooms were hit by the coronavirus, director general Tony Hall has told MPs.

Lord Hall said the broadcaster was “intent on keeping absolutely everything open” but is “gaming out” the possibilities of its staff being affected.

“You could imagine a local station or some other part of our news operation being out of action for a period,” he told the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

“We have to make sure our news services keep transmitting on television and on radio, and we are making sure we’ve got every eventuality covered,” he added.
