nanocosmos has released the first publicly available performance dataset for global MoQ (Media over QUIC) from its live CDN.
Covering use cases where real-time video is critical, such as interactive entertainment, iGaming, live auctions and more, the data collected includes startup times and latency from real-world consumer use across six continents over a 12 month period, and was presented for the first time at the Fraunhofer FOKUS MWS in Berlin.
Commenting, Luiza Sadowska, developer at the player team and developer advocate, nanocosmos, said, “This is not data we collected from ourselves, our research group, or test environments. We collect this from our customers. That makes it different.”
Comparing two protocol stacks, WebSocket vs. Webtransport (MoQ) across two performance dimensions: player connection time and player latency (startup time including buffer control, decoding, and rendering), the data found WebTransport consistently outperformed WebSocket across all regions.
MoQ was found to be consistently ultra-low with improvements between 25-50 per cent, all in the ultra-low-latency/real-time range around 500ms, said the company.
The data marks a first in the industry, said nanocosmos, with no production-grade performance dataset for MoQ in real world environments available until now. Operating MoQ across its own full stack, nanocosmos has end-to-end ownership from CDN through to browser player, requiring no third-party infrastructure at any layer, allowing it to measure, tune and improve performance in production.
The company is working to develop MoQ as an industry-wide standard, driving its support in tools such as OBS to create a protocol that an be adopted by the entire streaming ecosystem. Through its NanoReady partner programme, the company is bringing hardware and software partners into the MoQ environment, aiming to open its performance benefits to a broad range of operators and integrators.
