App Annie: Mobile video streaming up by 40 per cent in 2020

“The world has forever changed. While people stay at home across the world, we saw mobile habits accelerate by three years,” said Theodore Krantz, CEO of App Annie

Time spent watching video on mobile increased by 40 per cent worldwide during 2020 according to a new report by App Annie.

The company’s State of Mobile 2021 report states time spent on streaming apps peaked in Q2 2020 in the West as the first wave of Covid-19 hit.

It predicts that this year, the average mobile streamer in the UK will download 60 per cent more video streaming apps compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The report adds that YouTube was the leading video streaming app by time spent among all markets analysed, except China. It saw users spending up to 38 hours a month on the platform, said App Annie.

The arrival of Disney Plus has also proven to be a key factor in the rise time spent streaming. App Annie’s research says it was the second-most watched video app in Germany and the UK, and the fifth most-watched video app in France.

“The world has forever changed. While people stay at home across the world, we saw mobile habits accelerate by three years” said Theodore Krantz, CEO of App Annie.
