Sony stressing Papal blessing won’t leave global audience guessing

The Christmas Day Urbi et Orbi blessing will be broadcast live from St Peter's square using Sony's cinematic Super 35 technology

Vatican Media has announced an experiment in worldwide live broadcast.

The Urbi et Orbi blessing on Christmas Day will integrate Sony’s new HD-F5500V 4K system camera equipped with a Super 35 sensor, aiming to blend cinematic quality with the technical requirements of live broadcasting. Building on a longstanding relationship between the Dicastery for Communication and Sony, the initiative marks the latest in a series of collaborations to introduce cutting edge technologies into the Holy See’s communications, ensuring the Pope’s message is accessible to global audiences.

An existing system of high-profile HDC-5500V cameras will underpin the broadcast, ensuring the integration takes place in harmony with the international production while helping shape new perspectives for future Papal live broadcasts and enriching the Vatican’s content archive.

Engineer Francesco Masci, director of technology for the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See, commented, “In line with our mission, the Dicastery for Communication continues to invest in research and collaboration with leading technology partners such as Sony, so that the visual narrative of the Holy See’s events increasingly reflects the depth of the message we uphold.”

Benito Manlio Mari, senior sales manager, regional sales south, Sony Italy, added, “The collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication represents extraordinary added value for Sony Europe, as it allows us to continuously refine the performance requirements of our solutions, putting our technology to the test in one of the most significant live production contexts in the world.”
