Riedel enables broad reach for Americas Cup communications

Riedel's solutions enabled chase boats to monitor communications throughout the race, connecting with the main operations control to provide enhanced viewing experiences

Riedel has detailed the deployment of its IP-based communications systems for the Louis Vuitton 37th Americas Cup Barcelona.

Aiming to both enhance viewer experiences and improve safety and shot composition for camera operators, the sailing competition selected Riedel’s fully IP-based communications setup, enabling chase boats to listen directly to real-time communications of competitors during the yacht race.

Riedel provided 24 rugged and saltwater-proof cases for the yachts and chase boats, accessible via 5G/LTE. Crews used Bolero wireless intercom systems with the kits also connecting with the shore, enabling on-air sailor-coach interviews. 72 waterproof Riedel Bolero beltpacks were used by the crews, with custom headsets allowing for hands-free use in the challenging offshore environment. Ashore, 70 Riedel SmartPanels and a Riedel Artist-1024 matrix were complemented by more than 280 TETRA radios and a VHF commentary installation.

A fully integrated broadcast intercom setup was enabled in collaboration with AC Media’s production partners including MediaPro. Riedel SmartPanels were provided for the main operations control, fully interfaced with Riedel’s Juggler software.

Custom communications systems were supplied to all competing teams with more than 220 Bolero wireless beltpacks in use live on the water during peak days of the competition.

Stephen Nuttall, head of television for the 37th America’s Cup, said, “Riedel’s innovative IP-based communication system represents a significant leap forward in how we manage and produce this iconic event. The company’s innovative technology not only enables us to enhance the viewer experience — bringing fans closer to the action than ever by allowing every sailor’s voice to be heard on the broadcast — but also significantly improves operational efficiency and safety on the water. This comprehensive solution helped us achieve our goal of making the America’s Cup the most technologically advanced sailing competition in the world.”

Riedel’s Jeff Strössner, director business development managed technology, added, “The introduction of direct, real-time, high-quality, audio communications between chase boats and race yachts represented a significant advancement in how production teams capture the intensity and strategy of America’s Cup racing. We’re proud to provide leading-edge technology for this illustrious competition and play a crucial role in bringing the action to audiences worldwide with unprecedented immediacy.”
