First live broadcast from new BBC Wales building

BBC Wales’ new headquarters is the first BBC facility in the UK to deploy IP across both its production and broadcast operation

The first live broadcast from BBC Wales’s new Central Square building has taken place.

Channel announcer Leanne Thomas introduced the BBC News at Six on BBC One from the new centre.

Central Square officially opened last year. Production teams across news and sport are beginning to move into the building from the broadcast centre in Llandaff.

BBC Wales’ new headquarters is the first BBC facility in the UK to deploy IP across both its production and broadcast operation.

The Corporation worked with Grass Valley and Cisco to introduce IP technology across the facilities at Central Square.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, director of BBC Cymru Wales, says: “This is an historic day in Welsh broadcasting as we begin the migration of live services to the new centre. Llandaff has served us well for over 50 years, but this move provides us with the opportunity to modernise our technology systems, provide colleagues with modern, fit-for-purpose facilities and – once social distancing has ended – open up to our audiences like never before.
