Encompass Digital Media has announced a multi-year agreement with BBC World Service which aims to provide the corporation with the facility to provide targeted programming for specific locations via its Altitude Connect platform.
While predominantly IP-based, the hybrid solution also enables satellite provision for regions with insufficient internet availability.
Using six geographically diverse Altitude Media Cloud regions and a mixture of TV and radio partner, and FM relay sites, Encompass will deliver World Service content for up to 42 language services, said the company.
The SmartSwitch satellite-to-IP transition service will enable migration of the BBC’s global network, with Encompass’ London Media Centre providing full-time monitoring and management alongside real-time visibility and reporting.
Commenting on the collaboration, Marc Bruce, CEO of Encompass, said, “We are honoured to be working with the BBC on this innovative distribution service and to be trusted with their global content output. Altitude Connect is fast becoming the go-to solution for broadcasters looking to lower costs and migrate their satellite distribution to IP delivery. We look forward to continuing to grow our strong relationship with the BBC in the years to come.”
Nigel Fry, director distribution, international services at the BBC, added, “Throughout the tender process, we were very impressed with the Encompass team and their can-do attitude to addressing our complex distribution needs while delivering operational savings for the BBC.”
