UK’s Royal Mint to celebrate BBC centenary

A Royal Proclamation has been passed for a 50p coin to mark 100 years of the broadcaster

The Royal Mint will release a special 50 pence piece to celebrate the BBC’s centenary in 2022.

The organisation has confirmed that a Royal Proclamation has been passed for a 50p coin to mark 100 years of the broadcaster.

Clare Maclennan, divisional director of commemorative coin, said: “BBC 100 is an historic milestone for Britain’s much cherished national broadcaster and The Royal Mint is delighted to be joining forces with the BBC on plans for a commemorative 50p to mark the celebrations that will engage British people of all ages at home and abroad.”

Details of how the coin will look or when it will be released have not yet been announced.

The British Broadcasting Company, as the BBC was originally called, was formed on 18th October 1922 by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including Marconi.

Daily broadcasting by the BBC began in Marconi’s London studio, 2LO, on the Strand, on November 14th, 1922. John Reith was appointed general manager of the broadcaster at the end of 1922.
