Republic of Ireland approves Fox’s bid for Sky

Deal would "not result in insufficient plurality for any audience in the Republic of Ireland"

The on-going saga of whether 21st Century Fox will be allowed to acquire Sky has passed a major milestone with the Republic of Ireland government approving the merger.

Ireland’s Minister for Communications, Climate Action & Environment has found that the deal would “not result in insufficient plurality for any audience in the Republic of Ireland”.

Sky agreed to sell the remaining 61 per cent of its business not owned by Fox late last year.

However, the deal is still subject to clearance in the UK.

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley is currently deciding whether to refer the proposed deal to the competition and markets authority for a ‘phase two’ inquiry. A decision is due to be made by Thursday June 29th.
