The Polish government has announced it intends to block the sale of broadcasters Polsat and TVN to what it calls “hostile” states.
It follows reports Warner Bros Discovery was looking to sell TVN and a businessman linked to Hungary’s Prime Minister Victor Orban was interested in acquiring the broadcaster.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the move would safeguard Polsat and TVN from Russia’s attempts to influence Europe’s democracy, reports Associated Press.
“TVN and Polsat will be put in the register of strategic firms that are under protection against hostile takeover or one that is considered dangerous from the point of view of the interest of the Polish state,” Tusk added.
TVN and Polsat will join 17 strategically important companies that are already under special protection.
