BBC staff hit by Russian MOVEit hack

The BBC sent an email to staff warning that data stolen included staff ID numbers, dates of birth, home addresses and national insurance numbers

The BBC has revealed it has been the subject of a cyber attack, which is believed to have been from Russian hackers.

Payroll services provider Zellis is one of the companies affected by the MOVEit hack and it said data from eight of its customers had been stolen, including the BBC, Boots and British Airways.

The BBC sent an email to staff warning that data stolen included staff ID numbers, dates of birth, home addresses and national insurance numbers.

A BBC spokesman confirmed to the Daily Telegraph it has been affected by the hack: “We are aware of a data breach at our third party supplier, Zellis, and are working closely with them as they urgently investigate the extent of the breach.

“We take data security extremely seriously and are following the established reporting procedures.”
