Robe Can Dance in South Africa

Robe’s LED moving lights are being used in the current series of So You Think You Can Dance in South Africa, which is recorded at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)’s Renaissance Centre in Johannesburg.

Gearhouse South Africa (GHSH)’s Robert Grobler has designed the lighting, which uses 24 Robe DLX Spot and 24 DLF Wash fixtures. Using these, plus other Robe LED luminaires, has reduced the power requirements by a third from the previous So You Think… series. The TV show is the first in South Africa to feature an almost all LED moving light rig.

A series of overhead trusses have been installed in the venue to provide stage lighting positions and large areas of the set are lit by Robe colour changing LED fixtures. The full installation includes 24 DLF Wash and 24 DLX Spots, 12 LEDWash 600s, 20 ColorSpot 2500E ATs, 16 CityScape Xtremes, 14 CityScape 48s and 12 LEDForce 18 PARs.

The DLFs are used on the front trusses as key lighting for the cameras and for washing across the stage. The DLXs are filling ‘holes’ in some of the camera wide shots as well as being used to colour and texture the stage with gobos. Of the DLFs Grobler said: “I like the output/brightness, the zoom…and the shutters are very useful, especially on this show for evictions, where the contestants need tight highlighting.”

“I’m really impressed overall by the performance of the LED units,” added Pete Courier, project managing the account at GHSA. “The technology has advanced hugely in the last five years.”

Grobler runs the lightshow from a grandMA full size concole and GHSA is supplying the audio, power and rigging for the series.
