BBC snaps up PGA Championship rights

Sky lost the rights earlier this month

The BBC has fended off BT Sport and Twitter to secure the rights to next month’s PGA Championship, according to The Guardian.

Sky Sports lost the rights to the final major of the year last week, just days after announcing its own dedicated golf channel.

The deal is expected to be announced in the coming days, with the BBC looking to reclaim sporting content following the loss of Formula One and Six Nations rights throughout 2016.

The broadcast would mark only the second Open to be shown live by BBC.

“We had a good partnership with Sky but the 2017 US PGA Championship will not be on Sky,” the PGA of America’s CCO, Jeff Price, told the Guardian.

“It was a multi-year deal that was up. Ultimately one of the key things for us is scale of distribution and obviously with all the new platforms that consumers are engaging with, we want to make sure we reach all of them.”

One potential problem for the BBC is the PGA clash with the World Athletics Championships in London, which is likely to mean that golf will be on the red button until the conclusion of the athletics.

TVBEurope has contacted the BBC for further comment.
