Lisa Nandy endorses Marlow Film Studio

The Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport has voiced her support ahead of a decision on the long-running saga

The UK’s Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has reportedly given her backing to the proposed Marlow Film Studio.

In an interview with Bucks Free Press, Nandy spoke in favour of the development, which has previously received backing from Academy-award winning director, James Cameron.

Revised plans for the £3.5 billion project on the site of a former quarry were refused by Buckinghamshire County Council following opposition by local pressure group, Save Marlow’s Greenbelt, which expressed concerns that the facility would have detrimental effects on the environment.

Developers launched an appeal to the UK Planning Inspectorate, leading to a Public Inquiry which took place earlier this year. A decision by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government is expected in October.

Speaking to Bucks Free Press, Nandy said, “[The government is] working hand in glove with the company to make sure that we break down any barriers to growth and to help create those great jobs and opportunities for Marlow.

“I have made clear my view that this is a thoroughly good project, that will bring great economic benefit and opportunities to Marlow. I am really keen to see that progress. I was at Pinewood Studios recently and saw for myself what they are doing to inspire a whole generation of young people to be able to go into the film industry. We are really keen to see these opportunities extended to young people in Marlow, and the surrounding area. Obviously there is a planning process to go through, but we have already acted to make the planning process far more streamlined, and helping to ensure that we get the infrastructure built that we need.”
