The BBC’s Match of the Day studio at Media City Studios in Salford has undergone a major refurbishment, moving from green screen to a new extended reality solution.
Initially developed for the broadcaster’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the technology is now being used on programmes such as BBC One’s flagship football show.
The new studio includes Roe Visual’s Ruby RB1.5 wall panels (1.5mm pixel pitch) and Black Marble BM2 LED flooring.
“Moving into a smaller studio space meant we needed a more creative approach to how we use LED,” said John Murphy, BBC Sport design director. “For this permanent installation, the BM2 panels have been customised with a bespoke surface finish—a first for the glossy BM2—developed in close collaboration with the Roe Visual team. By combining a premium XR technology backbone with set extension, high-end graphics and fast metadata exchange, we can create a much larger visual environment from a more compact footprint.
“The result is a studio that doesn’t feel compact—it feels expansive, immersive, and completely future-proof. Roe Visual’s agility and development expertise were key to making that concept work,” added Murphy.
As well as the technology from Roe Visual, the studio’s pipeline also includes AE Live and Megapixel.
