UK SVoD subscriptions increased 20 per cent in 2018

11.6 million UK households now have Netflix, Amazon or NOW TV

Over 11 million UK homes now subscribe to at least one streaming service according to a new report from BARB.

In its white paper The SVOD Report: Charting the growth in SVOD services across the UK, BARB found that in the third quarter of 2018, 11.6 million households now have Netflix, Amazon or NOW TV – an increase of 22 per cent compared to the same time period in 2017.

The report estimated that Netflix had added 2.2 million households in the UK since 2017, with Amazon around 1 million and NOW TV adding 200,000 new customers.

UK viewers are also subscribing to multiple video streaming services at a greater rate than ever before. BARB found that the number of homes which paid for two or more services rose by 40 per cent to 4 million in 2018, up from 2.8 million the year before.

“Change is afoot as subscription video-on-demand services continue to cement their place in the television ecosystem,” said BARB. “Netflix is the main driver.”
