Tenth of global population will use an OTT service at least once a month

eMarketer predicts OTT subscription market will grow by 24 per cent in 2018

Following yesterday’s news that SVoD subscriptions in the UK have overtaken pay-TV for the first time, the same services are expected to be viewed by 10 per cent of the global population in at least once a month in 2018.

eMarketer has forecast that nearly 765 million people worldwide are tuning in to watch content on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, with the global OTT subscription market expected to grow by 24 per cent this year.

According to eMarketer, the growth is down to increasing internet penetration, faster internet speeds and an overall shift to consuming entertainment online.

Netflix is particularly popular in Nordic countries, where the OTT markets are very advanced and there is a high concentration of broadband access. In Germany, viewership has experienced a strong increase in the past year.
