Highest honour awarded by SMPTE

Sky’s MD of content technology and innovation Cristina Gomila has been named the first ever female recipient of SMPTE’s Progress Medal, the highest award the organisation presents.

The award recognises outstanding technical contributions to the progress of the engineering phases of the motion-picture, television, or motion-imaging industries, SMPTE said Gomila has been chosen for her leadership and ongoing contributions to the motion-picture and media industry.

As well as Sky, Gomila has previously held a number of positions at Technicolor, including CTO in France.

Speaking about her award, Gomila said: “Throughout my career, I have worked and led some of the most talented teams in the media industry. Having this recognised is already accolade enough, but to be the first woman to receive this prestigious award makes it extra special.”

Gomila will be presented with the medal at SMPTE Annual Awards Gala on 24th October.
