Rakuten TV has expanded into 30 new European territories with plans to bring 8K films to its service.
The VoD company has tripled its European distribution by launching in the Nordics and large parts of Central and Eastern Europe.
The company’s CEO Jacinto Roca told Variety the expansion helps Rakuten TV become a “true global alternative” to the likes of Netflix and Amazon.
He added that making films available in 8K is “a project we are going to try and make a reality in the second half of this year.”
Roca also commented on day-and-date/simultaneous releases: “We strongly believe customers and also producers will benefit from that, and also the cinema chains and digital players will not suffer damage in terms of their revenues on theatrical.”
