Premier League ‘planning to launch its own Netflix for live football’

Premier League is currently looking at ways to increase its revenue after the price for domestic rights fell during the last auction

The Premier League is reportedly considering launching its own streaming service for live matches.

According to a report in the Sunday Times, the Netflix-style streaming service was due to be tested in Singapore, but the Premier League backed out of the project. Instead, the league sold rights to the next three seasons to Singapore telecoms company Singtel.

The Premier League is currently looking at ways to increase its revenue after the price for domestic rights fell during the last auction.

Last week former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan said a streaming service similar to the NFL’s model could increase broadcast revenues to roughly £10 billion per season.

“In my view, the Premier League has the opportunity to become a broadcaster in its own right and dwarf the revenues it currently gets,” he said.
