Orange has made its OCast technology available as Open Source.
OCast allows users to use a smartphone to play videos via a TV or set-top box, and control playback, and can also be used to control slideshows, playlists and web apps.
Orange stated that any telecom operator offering TV access will be able to deliver OCast to its customers, requiring “no specific development”.
Thierry Souche, SVP, Orange Labs Services and Group CIO, Orange, said: “The release of OCast as open source software is a milestone in Orange’s technical strategy, by enabling it to accelerate the development of the services available via its set-top boxes, and by creating a virtuous circle with other operators to create a new video services ecosystem.”
Orange is also joining forces with its subsidiary Viaccess-Orca, which will integrate this technology in its range of solutions for TV operators.
