NHK confirms 8K channel launch date

NHK BS8K will debut on 1st December

Japanese broadcaster NHK has announced its new 8K channel will launch on 1st December.

It will initially broadcast for 12 hours daily, from 10 am to 10:10 pm.

NHK will also launch NHK BS4K at the same time.

The 8K channel will offer 22.2 channel audio and broadcast a range of music and arts programming as well as drama, nature and pictures of Earth shot from the International Space Station (ISS, NASA).

The broadcaster has previously said it aims to start full-scale 8K broadcasting by 2020, focusing on the Summer Olympics and Paralympic games in Tokyo.
