Netflix aims to take to the skies

SVoD platform is aiming to offer its mobile encoding to airlines beginning in 2018

Netflix is aiming to make its platform easier to use on flights by extending its bandwidth-efficient technology built for mobile devices to airlines around the world.

The SVoD platform is aiming to offer its mobile encoding to airlines beginning in 2018, which it says can save up to 75 per cent of bandwidth while still providing high-quality streams.

Netflix already works with with airlines including Virgin America and Qantas to provide flyers with access to its service.

The benefit to airlines is to build “a sustainable model” around low-cost or free in-flight Wi-Fi says Netflix.

The company claims the more-efficient mobile encodes it developed can deliver DVD-quality video on mobile devices at 250 kilobits per second — overall, delivering equivalent video quality while using up to 36 per cent less bandwidth than its conventional encoding techniques.
