Netflix agrees to reduce bit rates across all streams in Europe

Estimates will reduce Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25 per cent

Netflix has announced it will reduce bit rates across all its streams in Europe for 30 days following discussions with the European Commission.

European Commissioner Thierry Breton has held discussions with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings about preventing networks from being overloaded, urging the streamer to #SwitchToStandard definition when HD is not necessary.

The EC and Netflix later issued a statement announcing the SVoD has agreed to the proposal.

In a statement, Breton said, “I welcome the very prompt action that Netflix has taken to preserve the smooth functioning of the internet during the COVID19 crisis while maintaining a good experience for users. Mr Hastings has demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility and solidarity. We’ll keep closely in touch to follow the evolution of the situation together.”

Netflix added, “Following the discussions between commissioner Breton and Reed Hastings – and given the extraordinary challenges raised by the coronavirus – Netflix has decided to begin reducing bit rates across all our streams in Europe for 30 days.

“We estimate this will reduce Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25 per cent while also ensuring a good quality service for our members.”
