LG starts taking orders for 8K OLED TV

Uses deep learning algorithms to upscale 4K content

LG has started taking orders for its 8K OLED TV, The Verge has revealed.

The 88-inch model is currently available in South Korea and due to go on sale in North America and Europe from July this year.

LG said the TV’s recommended retail price is around £33,400, but customers who pre-order in June can pay a reduced price of £26,700.

Given the limited amount of 8K content, LG is reportedly upscaling 4K images by “leaning on its second-generation Alpha 9 8K processor that uses deep learning algorithms to help upscale images to a higher resolution.”

The TV will also use deep learning to “generate virtual 5.1 surround sound with support for Dolby Atmos.”
