The president of La Liga says the Spanish football league is considering increasing its online presence as it aims to reach more fans worldwide.
Speaking at the Nikkei Global Management Forum in Tokyo, Javier Tebas said online broadcasting could be a way for La Liga to compete with the global popularity of the English Premier League.
“We are living in a digital world,” Tebas said. “We need to try to adapt to this change. The soccer world needs to adapt to this change.”
“We need to consider [various] platforms,” he told the audience.
“Netflix, Rakuten – many institutions and enterprises are interested” in securing broadcasting rights, revealed Tebas, adding that SoftBank Group, Amazon and Facebook are also possible business partners.
“When it comes to growing the industry, we shouldn’t stick to the conventional way,” he said.
