Germany to host alternative Eurovision

ProSieben will broadcast the Free European Song Contest live from Cologne on 16th May

After the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, German broadcaster ProSieben is organising its own competition called the Free European Song Contest or #FreeESC.

Citing disappointment over the lack of Eurovision this year, German producer Stefan Raab introduced the idea of an alternative contest. “Music connects many people to each other, especially in difficult times,” he said. “This is the birth of a new, free European song competition.”

ProSieben will broadcast the Free European Song Contest live from Cologne on 16th May, with Raab serving as producer. It stressed the production will meet all current requirements around social-distancing during production.

“We are happy about the great opportunity to celebrate Europe in these times with a new music competition,” said ProSieben MD Daniel Rosemann. “We look forward to the Free European Song Contest.”
