Former RAI CEO calls for ‘Italian Britbox’

Antonio Dall'Orto warns of growing threat of global streamers

Antonio Campo Dall’Orto, former CEO of Italian broadcaster RAI, has called on the company to join forces with Mediaset in order to launch an Italian version of Britbox.

In an interview with La Stampa, he said the companies needed to work together in order to stop them being overtaken by the global streamers such as Netflix.

“The difference in content between the free and paid model is clear,” said Dall’Orto. “After Netflix and Amazon Prime, it is the year of AppleTV+ and Disney Plus. Their offers are primarily based on exclusive, original and global content.”

He suggested the companies need to assess whether there is room for a streamer that aggregates RAI and Mediaset’s content in order to offer an alternative.

“When I was at RAI, my strategy was to develop a platform that was technologically and quantitatively significant,” Dall’Orto continued. “If this is the goal, there is no reason why you can’t create a place that includes content from different producers, and that also includes La7 and Discovery’s original productions.”
