Facebook to launch standalone TV app

Social networking site aims to compete for advertising revenues with the likes of YouTube and traditional television channels.

Facebook is to launch an app that will allow users to watch its content on TV.

The move is seen as an attempt by the social networking site to compete for advertising revenues with the likes of YouTube and traditional TV channels.

Users with Apple TV, Amazon’s Fire TV and Samsung’s Smart TVs will be able to watch Facebook’s user-generated videos directly on their TVs.

Facebook says the standalone app will launch “soon”.

Alongside the announcement, Facebook also confirmed videos in its news feed will now autoplay with sound, and vertical videos will automatically expand to fit the screen.
