Bundesliga, Vodafone Deutschland kick off 5G partnership

New real-time app lets fans access information and performance data instantly via augmented reality

The DFL and Vodafone Germany have announced a new partnership that will use 5G in Bundesliga stadiums to enhance the experience for football fans.

A new real-time app will let fans access information and performance data instantly via augmented reality – before, during and after the match. The data is analysed in real time and sent to the app which visualises the data and provides live graphics, statistics and analysis that would normally only be available on TV after the game.

The companies said they are aiming to launch 5G in Bundesliga stadiums by the start of the new season.

Vodafone CEO Hannes Ametsreiter said: “Our partnership with the DFL is the kickoff for 5G in the Bundesliga. With the new mobile technology we bring real-time information to statistic lovers in the stands and increase the network capacity for the fans in the stadium.”

“Technologies are only as good as the applications that result from them. As an innovation leader, the DFL is systematically pushing ahead with new sports and media technologies to give viewers in the stadium and in front of the screens additional opportunities,” added DFL managing director Christian Seifert.
