BBC unveils 360° video Blue Peter Garden Explorer

Lets users create a custom trailer with memorable Blue Peter moments

BBC R&D have unveiled the Blue Peter Garden Explorer, an interactive 360° video version of the Blue Peter Garden.

The object-based media technology allows anyone in the UK to experience the Garden (now in Salford) and delve into the 60-year history of the programme.

Through a series of 360° videos, users can take an interactive tour, navigate through the environment and look at everything around them.

When they spot a recognisable object, archive footage relating to that object can be played in a 2D video overlay. These clips can also be collected to create a custom trailer with memorable Blue Peter moments, which can then be shared online.

BBC R&D brought in 360° specialists from Motion Impossible and their latest robotic camera platform, the Agito. The remote-controlled dolly system is equipped with four-wheel steering and an actively balancing camera head.

Using a Kandao Obsidian R, the crew captured just under 1TB of HDR 8K video.
