The low latencies promised by 5G have yet to materialise in London, according to research by Global Wireless Solutions (GWS).
Assessing the 5G roll-out in the capital by EE, O2 and Vodafone, GWS concluded that the operators are struggling on consistency and reliability of performance.
Network speeds were found to vary significantly across the city, even dropping down to 4G in densely packed areas of London.
Average latencies were no different to those experienced on 4G networks (35-50ms), falling well below the 5G target of sub-10ms.
However, GWS noted that 5G download throughputs were three to four times faster than previous 4G testing in London, indicating “signs of good things to come for consumers.”
